As we pack up and leave the refugio, we realize we gained a trekker! “Bueno” the cat decided she was interested in following us down trail. We tried locking her in the refugio multiple times, but she was small and could fit through the many cracks in the structure. At some point we knew we had to get moving because we still had a long way to go and we had already burned half the day. We had also hoped Bueno would tire or get cold and turn back…but Bueno was on a mission to get out of there…and we were her ticket out.
A few hours of hiking we realize Bueno is not turning back. When we reach a stream crossing she climbs a tree and scouts what would be impassable for her. While we are discussing the dilemma if we should help the cat across the stream or if we should leave her to most likely freeze or be eaten on the way back….Bueno climbs onto the top of my pack and doesn’t move. Our question is answered…she knows what she is doing. As soon as I cross the stream, Bueno jumps off and catches up to Or who is leading us towards the refugio.
